Run for FUNds is a fundraiser run to raise money for RAVEN trust, while getting the community together for some easy going fun. This years event will be focusing on the Wet’suwet’en campaign. The Wet’suwet’en have been stewarding and protecting their traditional territories for time immemorial. With Coastal GasLink proposing a pipeline through their territories, the Wet’suwet’en are standing up and defending their land, air and water from the harm the pipeline will cause. They have launched two separate legal actions. The first legal action was launched by all the clans of Wet’suwet’en – requesting judicial review of Coastal GasLink’s environmental assessment based on several permit violations and failure to implement recommendations based on the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women and Girls. The second action is requesting the Federal Court to declare that Canada has a constitutional duty to keep the country’s greenhouse gas emissions well within the Paris agreement limit. Winning this legal battle would result in substantial changes to Canada’s environmental legislation – resulting in enabling the federal cabinet to cancel approvals previously given to fossil fuel projects, such as the pipeline proposed through Wet’suwet’en territories.
Why RAVEN trust?
This race will be taking place on the unceded territories of the Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ nations. Kayci and Sarah are both settlers on these territories and acknowledge that colonialism is an ongoing force working against Indigenous peoples in so-called “Victoria.” It is important to do more than acknowledge our presence on these lands. We must actively work to decolonize the ways in which we live our lives. By working to be an active ally to Indigenous peoples in so-called “Canada,” we have chosen to fundraise for RAVEN; an organization that works to amplify the voices and rights of Indigenous peoples, by raising legal defence funds to aid in protecting their traditional territories.
